Big Bridge on FF Theatrhythm - plus Violin Riff at the end!
(SPOILER: violin appears at the end!) Happy Father's Day, everyone! This video features one of my all-time favorite games: Final Fantasy Theatrhythm on PS4, a fantastic rhythm game that's perfect for musicians of all levels.
As a middle-aged gamer, this game brings back so many memories, and it's become a favorite in our household. Even my kids love using it during their practice sessions, and I've noticed a significant improvement in their rhythm skills since they started playing. It's amazing how games can be both fun and educational - crazy, right?
Happy gaming and Happy Father's Day to all the awesome dads out there! 🎮🎶

Bach Ave Maria (Gounod) for Violin and Piano (both performed by Ben Chan)

Requested by my father-in-law Barry Wood for his birthday on April 1st (hard to tell if he was kidding or not...) A little rough around the edges, but overall fun to put together quickly on short notice and during the tiny bit of time I had away from my kids. Enjoy!
38th Birthday (08/08/20): Secret Garden on Solo Violin

It's been 12 years since my original Secret Garden video and I just had that itch to play it again this morning. Due to time constraints I was only able to get this one take in before I had to leave to do other things, but hopefully it'll be a fun nostalgic trip down memory lane for those of you who've been with me for the past 12 years! And THANK YOU for sticking around so long!
REMASTERED violin+piano: Bleach Never Meant to Belong
Переглядів 107 тис.4 роки тому
After 12 long years I've finally remade this video with high-quality video and audio. Although Bleach is long gone, I still feel the great depth of this piece and its exceptional impact on my life. This is a relic of my past single self, and I still remember the pain and anguish I felt the first time I played this piece. I also now feel a different kind of pain and anguish for the suffering of ...

Long overdue! benchanmusic.com/freemusic I don't expect you to watch the entire video unless you REALLY want to, but for those of you hardcore sheet music transcribing enthusiasts, this is how I transcribe music by ear. And the speed at which I do it is heavily dependent on how well I know the piece by ear.

Tutorial: How to Play Bleach Never Meant To Belong

For those of you intermediate to advanced violinists looking to play a piece that really tugs at the heartstrings (no pun intended), Bleach Never Meant to Belong is a great piece. It's what I played to consoled myself while I was still single and living ungloriously alone in an apartment in 2008. There's a spot in the middle that I can't exactly remember, but I remembered the rest of it, lol. N...

In 60 seconds: How to Improve String Crossing on the Violin

NOTE: Post a comment and I'll do my best to respond! Here's how I practice string crossing: alternate placing your left hand finger and moving your right hand. Start slowly, allowing as much space between alternating movements as needed to get really comfortable with the process. Over time, shorten the amount of pause time. This may take weeks or months, but if you do this very carefully and di...

I found your videos when I was in secondary school and learning to play the violin. I always loved to listen to your playing. Plus your educational videos were always really clear to understand and super engaging! Since then, I’ve been in medical school … not practising🙈. I was feeling a bit down when I stumbled across your videos again. Your genuine enthusiasm reminded me of what it’s like to be passionate about something. If I had a violin teacher like you I don’t think I would’ve given it up so easily. Welcome back! P.S. if there’s a chance that you could get the instruNOTE app up and working again you’d be doing us rusty folk/music noobs a huge favour!

I am actually on restricted mode..so I don't comment a lot But I did turn it in just to drop some things I want to say and ask 1. I learned humility throughout the years..and I believe that is one really good thing to mention 2. Ideas? One is perhaps you can give recommendations on how people should choose their violin. Yours sounded great, I always wondered..if you could share that one, another is perhaps a video of how you played the Senna and Secret Garden pieces.. ..and perhaps some collaboration with other musicians. It was great seeing you again and good luck in your future prospects.. I'll be back in restricted mode, coz' I don't like commenting a lot anymore😅 If my suggested ideas were taken. I'll be watching them anyway😊

I discovered your channel through your cover of Never Meant To Belong. I think Bleach is a masterpiece as anime, as a manga, and musically also. Also I think Never Meant To Belong is one of the best songs of all time. And the way you played it was perfect. By the way, do you know that there is a continuation of the Bleach anime? It has the same composer and some great new music...

Hi, Ben!! Welcome back! and wish you great(er) success with your channel! The one thing I have learned over the past 16 years, is to practice really really slow, in order to get something up to speed. I'm not great on any one instrument, but all that I play, that seems to work for me. In answer to your second question, your tutorials are always great. Please keep'em coming: talent with the ability to teach is a good combo. You have it. I loved your Partita In E lesson from way back. Its been a dream of mine to play that and I've never given it a good workout.

I found your channel a couple of years ago, and I loved that you put the scores in the description for people to read along with. This next year, I am going to college for violin in Music Performance, and over the past couple of years I have really progressed with my instrument. I have really learned that progression is a thing that you measure on your own experiences, not how well others do. I also think videos of games and anime will still do great but whatever you end up posting, good luck! Thanks for the years of fun on your channel.

Ben, many of us are beginners. When you go off topic to the subject at hand by playing nursery rhymes or other music that you know correlates with this lesson, many of us then try and figure that out .when we are struggling with the technique of the lesson. It's fun to see your enthusiasm and I'm learning a lot. But beginners need to focus. In my early days of learning, this movie was inspirational. I always wanted to play the gypsy theme and now you've made that possible.

Welcome back Ben!! I'm pretty sure I was a freshman or sophomore in high school when I first discovered your channel as a fellow violinist - well now I'm 29 and working on my PhD after working in education for a while! You inspired me to blend my love of both classical and pop/anime, and in ugrad we created a student-led pop orchestra that grew to 50+ members and performed tons of in-house arrangements of studio ghibli/anime/movie music. I would say over the years I learned to move through life a bit slower, prioritizing the present doing things I love, with people I love, rather than always focusing on work/ambition/success, esp. for the sake of recognition. I would love to see you cover any music you currently like listening to, or throwbacks! I recently learned that people generally rate the music they grew up on, in their teenage years, as their favorite era of music. Maybe some cross-generation mixes between your children's music preferences and some of your own? :) Would also love to just hear you talk about where life has taken you, and hear about the adventures you've had along the way. Anyways - so lovely seeing you again. So much nostalgia.

Found your channel 14 years ago when I first started playing violin as a hobby, a while I don't play much anymore I still come back to some of your videos (Chrono trigger is one of my favorites) just because of how much you made me love hearing the violin being played. Something I've learned over these past years is just to enjoy the journey instead of rushing towards the goal. Sometimes enjoying the journey is the only goal.

Nice seeing you again :) I started watching your content in 2011, right when my older brother introduced me to Bleach, I was 16 at the time. I wanted to learn Senna on violin, but I didn't know the technique and fingerplacement. Your videos breaking songs down to more digestable pieces made it so much easier, and has made me learn how to approach new pieces. Since then I've put a pause on my violin journey, and have started singing in a choir, where I've got the oppertunity too meet talented singers. With them I have traveled the world, singing all over in choirfestivals arranged by Interkultur. The music theory and strategy I've learned from you has made this possible, which I want to thank you for. Regarding your channel, and what to do with it, I think the educational material is essential, but maybe it doesn't fit youtube algorythmically. Perhaps approaching it with something viral, too "stay relevant" will give you new subscribers, that you'll be able to teach. Maybe find the newest tiktok song and post a tutorial for it, like "Abra Cadabra". I am excited to see what you'll be posting :)

    • @BenChanViolin
      @BenChanViolin 17 днів тому

Thank you for sharing your success -- really glad you've been able to travel and share music through singing! I agree that algorithmically teaching music doesn't seem to be a big "hit" on UA-cam... but I think my goal is bigger than viewership at this point. I'm looking to leave a legacy for my kids as well as cater to the interests of those who actually watch my videos in the hopes that I can continue to help inspire the current and rising generations.

Wow you're back! I distinctly remember your videos from back in the day in high school around age 16, I've always loved final fantasy music. Now that I'm remembering, I didn't realize how much I listened to music before I picked up the violin at 19. Now I've played for 12 years. Do you remember jtehanonymous and lindsey stirling around that time? For a video idea, would you want to play some fiddle tunes, like some reels or jigs? It was a nice surprise to see your video tonight, and to hear about your life update. And especially stoked you want to make some videos!

Like many others, I discovered your videos when I was a young elementary/middle school violin student. Your videos were immensely inspiring, both because of your talent and the beautiful anime melodies you'd play. I would try to play the songs you'd post myself on my own violin, even if I sucked, even if other students had a private tutor and I didn't--you kept me going and ignited my love for violin. So: I wanna say thank you so much for all you've done! You've clearly affected and touched a lot of people's lives. I still rewatch so many of those old videos of yours and I go straight back to a happy time in my life. I'm now a medical student and I still think of your videos anytime I want to revisit the violin :) As for the questions you've posed in the caption: I'd love to see you continue to make tutorials and play anime or video game music, but it'd also be great to see you play your own pieces, make covers, or other stuff like that. I think I'd even love to have more videos like this of you just talking, sharing your experience with the violin, what it's meant to you, your thoughts or things you've learned along the way in life. Thank you!

I discovered your channel 12+ years ago, around the time I was first picking up the violin. I fell in love with all of your covers. I was ecstatic that you had the sheet music available for download on your website, as it gave me something I was excited to learn and attempt to recreate myself. I probably still have some of the music I printed off in a folder somewhere. Sometime in late high school, I ended up dropping the violin and put more time pursuing learning about computers, programming, and game development, then graduated from college with a BS in computer science (and almost with a minor in Japanese). Now I'm almost 5 years into my professional dev career and loving it. Now that my early adult life is calming down, I've been thinking of picking up my violin again. Though I wasn't playing at the time, your Song of Skyrim solo stuck out to me the most and I've wanted to make learning that a goal of mine for quite some time. I'm going to take this post as a sign that I should start practicing again and start working towards that goal. Thank you for the 16.5 years of content. I'm glad it sounds like you and your family are doing well! In terms of future content: Just keep making content that makes you happy. I know that's not exactly unique advise, but the charm of your videos has been that you appear genuinely excited, be it a cover you worked on, a life update, or whatever.

This is great feedback and a really encouraging life story -- thank you for sharing! With the money you earn as a professional, I hope you'll put some of it back into music as a hobby someday! I've spent a fair bit on violin upkeep/insurance as well as on my language learning pursuits, and it's nice to be backed by a healthy bank account while continuing to do what I love to do on the side.
